CUAVA has been named as a finalist in the Space Connect Australian Space Awards 2021 for the following categories:
CUAVA researchers Eleanor Bruce, Alex Jones, KC Wong and Kevin Davies in collaboration with DST researcher Doug Cato (DST), Tomonori Hu (NSW Smart Sensing Network), industry partner Paul Barber (ArborCarbon), Elaine Baker (MSI) and Scott Sheehan (MMR), have recently received funding to solve a challenge posed by the Government’s Business Research and Innovation Initiative (BRII) to automate the detection of whales at sea.
The Australian Space Awards showcases the best and brightest in Australia’s space industry. This year the University of Sydney has been named Academic Institution of the Year at the 2020 Australian Space Awards. “The award recognises the achievements of space engineering teaching and research at the University of Sydney since 2001,” said event organiser, SpaceConnect.

Saber Astronautics is starting a new program to open source software to connect satellites to mission control centres. Called the Open Source Space Operations project, or “OSSO”, the aim is to make it easier for new space companies to rapidly deploy their missions.
Saber Astronautics, partners in the ARC Training Centre CUAVA, have been awarded a $6 Million grant by the Department of Industry, Science, Innovation, and Resources in conjunction with the Australian Space Agency for the development of Australia’s Mission Control Centre. This project received grant funding from the Australian Government’s Space Infrastructure Fund.
